Moving further south, beyond the awe-inspiring temples at Paestum, unfolds the Cilento National Park with its rugged coastline, sandy beaches and UNESCO World Heritage status. Tourism here is in its infancy and has remained a closely guarded secret by the Italians for many years. A land of mythology, visitors will marvel at the archaeological ruins from Paestum to Velia and at a coastline scattered with Saracen watch-towers. This area is also where ‘slow food’ is the order of the day with numerous agriturismo offering local delicacies – try the excellent buffalo mozzarella.
