In the land of the Northern Lights
Northern Norway is considered one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, and NASA has predicted that winter 2013/14 will be a period of Solar Maximum and could have the most spectacular and powerful displays in years. Autumn 2013 has already witnessed some spectacular Aurora displays in the skies above Tromsø. Book your trip to Northern Norway with Sunvil this winter to give yourself a good chance of sighting this natural phenomenon.
From £1,130 per person
The price includes return flights to Tromsø Langnes airport (via Oslo Gardermoen) with SAS Scandinavian Airlines; return private transfers; Bed & Breakfast accommodation and excursions as detailed.
We would recommend that you book a tour that includes an activity, or a visit to a region of spectacular natural beauty, so that you have a wonderful evening regardless of a sighting. This three-night itinerary includes an evening Northern Lights tour and an evening Snowmobile tour, both far away from the artificial lights of the city.
On arrival at Tromsø airport transfer to the Hotel
Northern Lights Tour - Day at leisure in Tromsø. Opportunity to visit the Arctic Cathedral, Polar Museum and Polaria, an arctic themed visitor centre. In the evening transfer to the Tromsø Villmarkssenter on the outskirts of the city (c.30-minutes transfer each way). Away from the artificial lights of the city the Villmarkssenter offers an excellent setting for a sighting of the Aurora. You will also enjoy a traditional meal served in comfort of a lavvo.
Snowmobile tour - Day at leisure in Tromsø. It is possible to pre-book a range of winter excursions with Sunvil Discovery or explore Tromsø at your own pace. In the early evening, venture into the Valley of Finn (c.1 hour 15-minutes transfer each way) and traverse the frozen mountainous landscape on the back of a snowmobile. This is an exhilarating 7 hour excursion that includes a 30km snowmobile ride, a hot meal and the opportunity to try ice-fishing.
Transfer to Tromsø airport for the return flight to the UK.
Of course, we cannot guarantee a sighting with a natural occurrence but, this will be a bumper season. To increase your chances, we would recommend that you:
• Leave the artificial lights of the city behind
• Choose excursions which offer the opportunity to ‘chase’ or ‘search’ for the Northern Lights: They have a higher success of sightings.
• Travel at the time of the new moon when the sky is at its darkest.
• Avoid travelling at the time of a full moon.
• Stay as long as you can. Four-nights or longer is ideal.
But, above all, we would recommend that you book a tour that includes an activity, or a visit to a region of spectacular natural beauty, so that you have a wonderful evening regardless of a sighting.
The dates of the new moon in 2013/14 are:
• 3 November 2013
• 3 December 2013
• 1 January 2014
• 30 January 2014
• 1 March 2014
• 30 March 2014
• 29 April 2014
