The small seaside town of Vila Nova de Milfontes lies on the estuary of the River Mira, which rises high in the Serra do Caldeirao. The charming centre of whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets stands above an expanse of sandy beach. Milfontes has long been popular with the Portuguese but has remained undiscovered by foreign tourists. The town has several small restaurants and snack bars, yet retains a relaxed and sleepy atmosphere. This is a deserted, beautiful coastline with attractive villages and fine sandy coves and beaches. Behind the coast are the sweeping plains of the Alentejo.

The Troia peninsula, with its spectacular beaches accommodates an excellent resort, and affords easy access to Setubal across the estuary from where one can easily visit Lisbon for the day by train.
