Overview

Introduction

Alonissos is the least developed of the northern Sporades; a green retreat in which to swim, walk and gently explore. Around its shores are many coves and beaches, lapped by the clearest of seas and backed by green hills. Inland is a scenic joy, and the network of marked trails through the varied countryside makes for some excellent walking.

The island is about 20 kilometres long by 4 wide, its hilly terrain softened by oak and pine. Ferries and catamarans leave regularly from the main port of Patitiri for Skopelos, only 20 minutes away, and for Skiathos, another hour further to the west. This makes the odd day excursion easy, as well as twincentre holidays.

Some twenty minutes walk to the north is the delightful fishing harbour of Votsi, its clear waters and pretty pebble beach backed by cliffs and pines. Votsi has a traditional, generally sleepy village atmosphere, a handful of small shops and some good tavernas. Walk back over the headland towards Patitiri and you will come to the beach at Rossoum which has tavernas of its own.

Old Alonissos, high above Patitiri, boasts stunning views and is certainly picturesque. Abandoned in the 1960’s, the old houses are now largely restored and favoured by artists and writers. The village now has a dozen tavernas, several cafés, a couple of bars and a mini-market. There is a bus link from Patitiri (operates June to September) and it can also be reached on foot in 35-45 minutes via a goat track (2.5 kms) or in 7-8 minutes by taxi. Old Alonissos is particularly atmospheric in the evenings, and we'd recommend all visitors to come for dinner here at least once.

Much of the sea around the island are designated a National Marine Park, partly set up to protect the endangered indigenous Monk Seal. A wonderful day out is a boat trip to the Park on a traditional schooner - often accompanied by a marine biologist.

On the edge of the Park, halfway up the east coast, is the pretty fishing harbour of Steni Vala – very peaceful with four authentic local tavernas plus a couple of cafés and mini-markets. Steni Vala is also home to a Monk Seal rehabilitation centre, and you can adopt one if you wish to help. A bus service from Steni Vala to Patitiri operates June to September.

Diving is big on Alonissos which has the kudos of being accredited as the first Underwater Museum in Greece and you will find a choice of dive schools.

Alonissos is a quiet, very beautiful island which is quite happy to remain off the main tourist path. largely traditional, it would suit those looking for an unhurried holiday in natural surroundings, fine views, good swimming – there is a string of fine beaches up the east coast from peaceful Milia to picturesque Aghios Dimitrios – and walking.

Walking on Alonissos

Alonissos is one of the best islands for walking as it has a network of marked trails. Guided walks can be booked locally through our island representative on arrival or in advance. Most start from Patitiri and take 3-4 hours including stops - a few take 5-6 hours. The cost is 15€ to 20€ per person - some walks require transport to or from the start/end point and this cost is shared among the party. Further information can be found here.

There are a couple of useful books to enable you to discover Alonissos's hidden gems and spectacular viewpoints on foot or with a car.

Alonnisos on Foot is a hiking book that takes you to many places of interest on the island. It is beautifully illustrated with watercolours and hiking maps.

The Alonnisos Guide gives you a comprehensive portrait of the beautiful island to help you make the most of your visit. Directions to all accessible beaches, villages and interesting locations in the countryside. It also introduces you to a wide variety of local flora and fauna.

The book is illustrated with a general map of the island, Bente Keller`s watercolours, many colour photos and black/white photos from `the old days`.

Both books provide rich information to make the most of a visit to the island and can be bought online by clicking on the book titles above, or locally from our representative on Alonissos (cost €15 each plus p&p).

Here are some examples of guided walks that took place in 2022.

Holiday Tip

Our local representative recommends an excursion to the Marine Park and the islands surrounding Alonissos. The tour visits an ancient monastery on Kyria Panagia, where a shop sells produce made by the monks of Athos, including wine and honey preserves – Perfect for souvenirs. A traditional lunch with wine is served and there is a high possibility of seeing dolphins, a variety of birdlife and, on occasions, a monk seal.

Claire Kalatzis

Claire joined us in 2005 after having spent 6 years in Lesbos running her own business teaching English, where she married a Greek. The economic crisis in Greece forced them to return to the UK. Alongside day to day reservations, Claire is also mother goose to our 30 or so overseas representatives in Greece and works very closely with Graeme, our overseas manager in Greece, to arrange for their interviewing and training. Understandably she loves Alonissos.
