Introduction

Always vibrant, this 24-hour city is an intriguing mix of east and west, history and modernity, bustle and culture. Athens contains treasures that really should be seen at least once, and a few nights here can easily be included in our fly-drive or tailor-made holidays.

Over recent years there has been substantial investment in Athens’ infrastructure (new airport, roads, transport systems), upgrading of museums and historical sites, and significant hotel refurbishment.

Tickets for the Acropolis and the main sites of Athens’ historical centre can be booked online at here or via their app. Due to high demand, a visitor zoning system is in place meaning that tickets for the Acropolis site can only be pre-booked for certain time slots - please see this explanatory video.

We have selected a range of hotels, mainly within our favoured district of Makriyianni, as it is just a short walk from both the Acropolis, the splendid new Acropolis Museum and the atmospheric 19th century Plaka district, now largely pedestrianised.

Athens also has organised beaches – the nearest can be reached by tram from the centre in about half-an-hour.

Wherever you stay, a wide range of guided excursions can be had, the most popular being the half-day city tour, full day Delphi and full day Argolis (Mycenae and Epidavros). All can be pre-booked. For a brief taste of Athens a few nights in the city can also be included in any holiday booked via Athens Airport.

The closest islands to Athens are the Saronics – Aegina which can be reached by ferry in just 40 mins and pretty Agistri in 55 mins, making a short stay in the city followed by a relaxing island break by the sea very easy. Our resort of Tolon and the historic town of Nafplion in the north Peloponnese are also easy to combine with Athens, being a two hour transfer time by road.

Excursions from Athens

Below is a sample of the most popular excursions available from Athens. All can be pre-booked, and a pick-up service is included from all our central Athens hotels. Entrance fees to sites/museums are included unless otherwise stated and all coach tours are escorted by an English-speaking licensed guide. Coaches are fully air-conditioned.

Half day walking and food tours in Athens are also available, as well as a full day cruise to the Saronic islands (Aegina, Poros, Hydra) - prices on request 

Longer coach tours of 2 to 5 days can be booked which include overnight hotel accommodation, and include Delphi, Argolis, Olympia, Meteora - please enquire for details and prices.

Notes: Prices are per person (children generally pay 50% - see below) and include the services of a professional English-speaking guide and entrance fees to sites and museums. Buses are fully air conditioned - those used on 2-day plus tours have WiFi.  Tours depart Athens 0815-0845 (except Sounion c 1500) and return 1200-1530 (½-day) or 1830-1900 (full day - these times do not allow for pickup/ drop-off at your hotel). On 1/2 day or 1 day tours, children under 4 years of age are free of charge but seat on coach not guaranteed. Children aged 4-12 years generally pay 50% on land tours. Days of operation are subject to change. Pick-up times will be advised locally.

For the sites wear sensible (flat) shoes – some sites may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties. Museums and sites are often closed 29 April, 1 May and 15 August.
