South-East Pelion
South-East Pelion holidays
Katigiorgis • Platanias
The wooded hills of the south-eastern corner of Pelion are less steep than the more mountainous north and the area more sparsely populated. This is good news for visitors because, coupled with the distance from Volos, it means it is lessens the Greek holiday crowds who would otherwise flock to the beaches and coves here (undoubtedly amongst the peninsula’s loveliest). Good walking is again a feature of the area.
Holidays In South-East Pelion
There are limited places to stay, the pick of which are the small seaside hamlets of Katigiorgis and Platanias. We have heard the former called Kati-gorgeous as it is so pretty! Comprising simply a compact but delightfully sandy beach facing Skiathos – the bay enclosed by rocky arms sheltering the village fishing boats – and a cluster of houses, its two tavernas are known for fresh fish. There is also a café and a minimarket – all you should need for a complete escape. Some fine beaches lie in either direction, ranging from tiny coves to longer stretches of sand, and can be found on foot (walkers only) or by car. For a change of scene, last year a water-taxi ran to Skiathos.
Platanias has more to it, with some halfdozen restaurants and local shops along its waterfront promenade, engendering a true Greek village atmosphere. The town beach here is perfectly fine, but a 15 minute walk south brings you to beautiful Mikro beach. Equally lovely Kastri beach to the north is a 10 minute drive, although walkers will enjoy the lovely 90 minutes on foot. Kastri can be reached by watertaxi, which also runs to busy Skiathos just across the strait. Another fine walk starts from Platanias up to the traditional village of Promyri some 7kms in the hills.
In either village car hire is recommended to further discover the area as the bus service here is limited
