Bird Watching Holidays on Lesvos

8th & 15th May and 18th September 2008

Situated off the coast of Asia Minor, Lesvos is not only the sole breeding outpost in Europe of Cinereous Bunting and Kruper’s Nuthatch but is also uniquely placed to receive a wide variety of eastern passage migrants.

Sunvil is pleased to offer clients the opportunity to enjoy a week or two in the prime birdwatching area of Skala Kalloni accompanied by Bob Husband, a very experienced ornithological guide. All dates above are available for 1 week holidays, with 2 weeks also available from 8th May.

Our birdwatching group will explore the island’s marshes, rivers and hillsides in search of migrants amid the colourful array of summer visitors such as Hoopoes and Bee-eaters. The reeds and scrub should be alive with the songs of numerous warblers including Eastern Olivaceous, Ruppell’s, Sub-alpine and the more elusive Orphean and Olive-tree Warblers. Lesser Kestrels breed on an off-shore island and Red-footed Falcons and other raptors occur on migration. In fact, almost anything can turn up!

Designed for beginners and old hands alike, and folk holidaying on their own or with non-birdwatching companions, the emphasis will be on leisurely exploration and sightseeing within reasonable travelling distance of our base at the Pela Hotel. Should you wish to stay in any other of our accommodations in Skala Kalloni then this is also possible.

The supplement on top of the normal holiday cost is £95 per person per week. This includes use of a shared hire car for 4 days every week (note: if you are willing to drive your fellow enthusiasts please let us know, and bring your driving licence). Any other transportation required will be organised and payable locally.

Prior to departure participants will be provided with an information pack, including a species list and other helpful details to prepare for the trip. Apart from binoculars no special equipment is required to enjoy this spectacular bird watching holiday.
