Rampant tourism development has resulted in parts of the Riviera Maya being overdeveloped and commercial. For this reason, our programme excludes the resort of Cancún. The commercial success of Cancún in the 1970’s led to hundreds of kilometres of public beach being sold off to property developers. There are thus huge beachfront hotels, shopping malls and discos and Cancún now draws 2.5 million visitors a year, via its direct flights from Europe and the Americas. 

Playa del Carmen, located 40 miles south of Cancún, has expanded rapidly over the past ten years. Despite evidence of ongoing building construction it still manages (just!) to retain much of its laidback fishing village ambience. There is a wide range of watersports on offer as well a good selection of restaurants, cafés and bars.  Puerto Morelos, 22 miles south of Cancún, is a quiet fishing village with a car ferry service to Cozumel.

We have selected two comfortable hotels in the heart of Playa del Carmen. They are sister hotels, hence their use of the small hotel group name of ‘Mosquito’. We should like to make it clear that this name is in no way indicative of an overwhelming presence of our insect friends in resort!
