Introduction

Chiloé island is the second largest island in Chile with neighbouring islets making it an archipelago. From Puerto Montt on the mainland, there are regular ferries across the Chacao Channel to the historical town of Ancud. Just a 30 minute ferry journey though Chiloé seems worlds apart from the mainland.

Chiloé offers wonderful old churches, colourful markets full of sea and agricultural products, knitted goods, woven baskets and ornaments and pure woollen blankets. The cuisine is unique and a local dish is Curanto; consisting of shell fish, smoked meats and pork steamed over hot stones sunk into the ground.

The island is rich in folklore and has a special culture and unique architecture. Over one hundred small wooden churches have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
