Los Roques
Los Roques holidays
Los Roques is an archipelago comprised of 41 pristine and unspoilt cayos (cays or reef-formed islands) surrounding a huge lagoon. The islands are protected by over 19 km of coral reef populated with schools of exotic fish.
Sea turtles visit the most remote beaches to lay their eggs. The waters are a clear, deep turquoise and the beaches of dazzling white sands. Los Roques was declared a Marine National Park in 1972 - there is an entrance fee of $26 pp. The days are sunny and hot and the nights are cool all year round.
Gran Roque is the only inhabited island in the archipelago. It is just a fishing village with three sandy lanes and an airstrip. Most buildings are white-washed with brightly coloured doors.
Natural shade is almost non-existent and the sun is relentless, so we recommend regular use of total sun block, a hat, sunglasses and sun umbrellas (provided by the posadas). Both our properties are just a short walk from the airstrip at Gran Roque.
