Read our Peace of Mind Promise for 2021 here

This document contains the latest information about the protocols, preventative measures and changes adopted in Italy and on Sicily in response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Since lockdown was announced, and before, we have been closely monitoring government guidance, regional policies and have maintained a continuous dialogue with our colleagues in Italy and on Sicily. Below we have highlighted the facts and guidelines relating to accommodation, shops and services. It is important to note that guidelines are being updated daily and you should contact us should you have any specific questions or concerns.

This document was updated on Thursday 21 January.

Arrivals

IMPORTANT: As of Thursday 15 October, Italy and Sicily have been removed from the UK's travel corridor. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office currently advise all but essential travel to the country. The Italian government has closed the country's border to UK travellers until 05 March, except for those holding official residency or travelling for essential purposes.

All visitors to Italy and Sicily from the United Kingdom are required to complete a self-declaration form.

  • Sicily: Visitors need to complete the following visitor arrival form
  • Puglia: Visitors need to fill in a questionnaire, downloadable from the region's website.

In addition, all visitors are required to undertake a Covid-19 PCR swab test or approved Antigen swab test within 72 hours of departure from the UK. A negative test result must be presented at check-in and on arrival into the country.

Please also ensure that you are familiar with the new rules for travel within Europe from 01 January 2021. A synopsis of the changes can be found in our dedicated blog.

Face masks

The use of masks is mandatory at all times in public - indoors and outdoors - in every part of the country. It is obligatory for visitors to carry a mask at all times.

Accommodation

A series of protocols have been adopted by hospitality establishments across the country to safeguard all. These measures include:

  • The adoption of social distancing (1m) between all employees and guests in all communal areas and lifts. The exception to this rule is for those travelling as one party
  • The provision of hand sanitiser in public areas
  • The mandatory use of face masks by employees and guests whilst in communal areas and lifts. Face masks are not required outdoors
  • Enhanced cleaning and air conditioning systems checked regularly
  • Temperature checks may take place

Parks, gardens and physical activity

Access to parks, villas and public gardens is allowed, respecting the interpersonal distance of at least one metre from non-cohabiting people. Performing outdoor physical activity is allowed, respecting the safe distance of at least 2 metres for sports activity and at least one metre for each other activity. Persons accompanying minors and persons who are not completely self-sufficient are not obliged to observe the safe distance.

The activities of gyms, swimming pools, spas and spas are suspended.

Transfers and car hire

Sunvil and our local partners have adopted the following measures when transferring our guests:

  • Transfer vehicles will be used to transfer those travelling together only (vehicles will not be shared with other parties)
  • Only the driver will be seated in the front of the car (the front seat intended for a passenger must not be used)
  • A maximum of two passengers sit on the rear seat, leaving the central seat free (Italy)
  • A maximum of three people in a car if they are not living with the driver (Sicily)
  • The use of face masks is compulsory for all occupants within transfer vehicles

  • Hire cars will be deep-cleaned prior to all rentals

Services

Restaurants and cafe-bars are permitted to offer seating inside and outdoors. Restaurants, bars, cake and ice-cream shops can stay open from 5am to 6pm and can only serve customers who are seated at a table. Face masks must be worn when sitting indoors and whenever leaving a seat. Hand sanitiser will be available and temperature checks may take place. Social distancing (1m) is required.

Shops are open and operating with limited capacity. You may be required to wait a few minutes before entering, as we have been doing so in the UK. The use of face masks is mandatory inside the premises.

Shopping centres are closed on weekends, with the exception of grocery stores, pharmacies, news agents and tobacconists.

Museums

Museums and other cultural institutions are closed.
