Overview

Introduction

Lombardy is the most populous and richest region in Italy, with a population of about 10 million and about a fifth of Italy’s gross domestic product being generated in the region.  It is characterised by rolling hills, fertile fields, rugged mountains, flat plains of the Po Valley and the watery landscapes of the Italian lakes – Maggiore, Como and Garda.  It is here that you will find the vineyards of Italy’s premier sparkling wines, Franciacorta as well as an abundance of historical castles, villas and palaces.

Some of the highlights include the Royal Villa of Monza – one of Europe’s most beautiful royal villas; centuries-old villas dotted around the lakeside city of Lecco which also offers a great base for walking and cycling in the surrounding hills and mountains; the Ducal Palace of Mantova and the walled town of Sabbioneta (a UNESCO site) rich with Renaissance architecture.  Just north of Lake Iseo, between the lakes of Como and Garda, are the petroglyphs (rock drawings) of Val Camonica.  The National Park of Rock Inscriptions (Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri), inscribed by UNESCO, is considered the world's greatest collection of prehistoric inscriptions with more than 140,000 symbols and figures covering both sides of the valley.

Milan, the region’s capital, has much to offer from its fashion, industry, urban appeal and famous cathedral, making it a great choice for a short (or longer) weekend break.  Take a leisurely walk through exclusive shops whilst admiring the wealth of art and culture the city has to offer from its immense Gothic cathedral (Duomo) to the church and Dominican convent (a UNESCO Site) of Santa Maria delle Grazie where you will find the masterpiece ‘The Last Supper’by Leonardo da Vinci - one of the world’s most important works of art.

Whether you want to shop in the fashion capital, explore the Italian lakes, hike in the mountains, or simply drive through bucolic rolling countryside, the region of Lombardy has it all.

Highlights

  • Il Vittoriale degli Italiani: A fabulous hillside estate located in Gardone Riviera overlooking Lake Garda. Visit the Art Deco home of the Italian writer and poet Gabriele d’Annunzio and his unusually designed gardens including a full size WWI battleship and small amphitheatre.
  • Villa del Balbianello: This beautiful villa, on the west banks of Lake Como, is in a scenic location on a wooded promontory that can easily be reached by ferry. Often used by film-makers, the location was featured in the James Bond thriller, Casino Royale.
  • The Borromeo Islands: Lake Maggiore is home to three islands that lie in a wide gulf surrounded by mountains. The islands of Bella and Madre have grand, luxurious residences and a C17th century Italian-style garden, while the third ‘dei Pescatori’ is an age-old fishing village.
  • Lake Como: The funicular railway which has linked Como and Brunate since 1894 is the quickest way of travelling between these two towns and is an ideal opportunity to enjoy stunning views over Lake Como and the Alps.
