Scenic drives

In recognition of the striking scenery they navigate, 18 roads across Norway have been designated as National Tourist Routes. Two of our favourite routes are in the Lofoten Islands and on Senja - Unmissable.

The Lofoten

With craggy alpine peaks, expanses of white sandy beaches, colourful fishing hamlets in sheltered ports and verdant agricultural communities, the Lofoten archipelago is the jewel of Norway. Be prepared to be amazed by the beauty this 100km chain of islands.

Tromsø

Located at a latitude of 70° north, Tromsø is the largest city above the Arctic Circle in the Nordic countries and also the location of the world’s northernmost university, brewery and cathedral. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the city enjoys a mild climate and as such is a delightful destination to visit at any time of year.

Kirkenes Snow Hotel

Spend a night at the Kirkenes Snow Hotel, which takes shape on the outskirts of Kirkenes each November. With twenty-four individually designed suites, a snow bar, on-site kennels and an excellent restaurant, a stay here will be the highlight of any trip to the Arctic.

History

The German occupation of Kirkenes early in World War II led to one of the most extensive air-raid assaults in the campaign with more than 300 bombing raids taking place. We would highly recommend a visit to Andersgrotta (a bomb shelter in the centre of Kirkenes) and the fascinating Frontier Museum.

Lyngen Alps

Contrasting with modern Tromsø, within a short drive you will find a landscape almost untouched by time and age-old traditions still very much alive. The Lyngen Alps with its peaks reaching up to 1833m, gushing rivers, blue glaciers and rugged, weather beaten lands are wonderful to explore by car or on foot.

Henningsvaer

Attracting artists with its colourful Rorbu, narrow waterways and active fi shing community, the village of Henningsvaer is an unmissable destination in the Lofoten. It is in Henningsvaer that you will fi nd the Lofoten House Gallery, glass and ceramic workshops and the Ocean Sounds Research Centre.

Wildlife

Look up and you might see a Golden Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Gannets, Puffins, Kittiwakes, Shag, Common guillemot, Arctic Skua or Fulmar. Take a boat trip to see sperm, humpback, minke, orca and pilot whales. Enjoy a leisurely drive in search of moose and reindeer.

Fishing

Fishing has always been the foundation of life on the Lofoten and from February to May visitors to the region will see tonnes of fish hung out to dry on the stockfish racks.

Illuminating Arctic lights

The sun does not rise above the horizon in Tromsø from 21Nov to 21Jan and in the Lofoten from 04Dec to 09Jan. When the sun returns it brings with it an array of colours - pinks, reds, yellows and purples - which are mesmerising to observe.

Viking heritage

The Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg (Lofoten) is a full-size reconstruction of a Chieftains longhouse and holds an exhibition of original artefacts. The quality of archaeological finds on display at the museum are extraordinary and the interactive museum warrants at least a half day visit.

Midnight Sun

Daylight hours increase rapidly throughout the spring until the time of the Midnight Sun when the sun does not set below the horizon (23May to 22Jul in Tromsø). To best experience this natural phenomenon head to the north coast of the archipelago or take a hike in the mountains and enjoy the scene from above.

Winter activities

Situated directly under the Aurora belt, Northern Norway is considered one of the best places in the world to witness this natural phenomenon. Snowmobile, dog-sled and reindeer-sled tours, King crab safaris, Aurora hunts and coastal cruises can be prebooked by Sunvil.

Senja

One of the most beautiful roads in Norway, follows the coastline of Senja island from Finnsnes to the village of Hamn. Dramatic views are visible at every turn and none more so than the panorama of the ‘Devil’s teeth’ rock formation at Tungeneset and at the Bergsbotn viewpoint over the Bergsfjord.

North Cape

At latitude 70°10’21” the precipitous end of Europe, the North Cape can be visited as an excursion from the Hurtigruten coastal voyage. With only Svalbard separating you from the North Pole, it literally feels like you are at the end of the world.
