Lysefjord and Pulpit Rock

The Lysefjord, the southernmost major Fjord in Norway, is the site of the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjerag mountain peaks. Perched atop an almost perfectly sheer cliff , the Preikestolen is 604m above the fjord-shore and affords incredible views.

Bergen

Bergen, bordered by a string of islands to the west and seven mountains to the east, has much to offer visitors. Explore the Hanseatic quarter of Bryggen - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bergenhus fortress, the Art Museum and fish market, and wander the cobbled streets of the historic centre.

Hardangerfjord

The 179km Hardangerfjord, and the arms of Samlafjord, Sørfjord and Eidfjord, wind inland from the village of Rosendal. With a backdrop of majestic mountains, powerful waterfalls – including the 182m Vøringsfossen waterfall, and idyllic fruit farms, this is the orchard of Norway.

Waterfalls

As the snow melts in the warming spring sunshine, the waterfalls of the Fjords begin to tumble down the mountainsides. Visit the Langfossen waterfall, the Steinsdalsfossen, Vøringsfossen, Seven Sisters and Batchelor waterfalls.

Røros

Røros is one of Europe’s oldest preserved wooden towns, and at every turn red-timber houses pay homage to the copper industry that brought wealth to the region. Today, many of the wooden buildings, in the historic centre, host galleries, glass and ceramic works, cafes and handicraft shops.

Boat excursions

An express boat connects Bergen to the fjord-side villages of Balestrand and Flåm and Hurtigruten links the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund to Bergen and to the village of Geiranger (summer months only). In addition, day excursions on the Lysefjord, Hardangerfjord and Geirangerfjord are available.

Hiking

From gentle strolls to full day hikes and glacial walks the fjord region of Norway is the destination of choice for outdoor enthusiasts. Within just 5-minutes walk you will find yourself immersed in peace and surrounded by some of the most dramatic and breathtakingly beautiful scenery in the world.

Trondheim

Trondheim is Norway’s third largest city. Wander along the broad avenues and visit the imposing Nidaros Cathedral, Royal Palace and Trøndelag Folk Museum. The highlight of the year is the St Olav’s festival (29 July).

Ålesund

Ålesund is the jewel of the fjords and an architectural gem. Best observed on foot or from the summit of the Aksla Mountain, the town is a worthy city break destination in its own right and an ideal base from which to explore the stunning Sunnmøre coastline.

Alesund, Norway Alesund, Norway

Sognefjord

Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway and the surrounding landscape incorporates the winding Stalheimskleiva road, the steepest road in the country with a gradient of 20%; the Flåmsbanen, one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world; and the narrow Naerøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Glaciers

Of particular interest in the region is the Jostedalsbreen National Park and its 487km² glacier, the largest in mainland Europe. The National Park Centre is a great attraction for those wishing to learn about the park. For those wishing to get close to the glacier, head to the arms of Nigardsbreen and Briksdal.

Geirangerfjord

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Geirangerfjord is one of the most scenically stunning of the Norwegian fjords. Measuring just 15km long and with its clear waters, breathtaking waterfalls, fertile mountain ledges and pristine beauty, it is also one of the most visited.
