Close to the Spanish border, in the district of Portalegre, is the fortified hilltop town of Alter do Chão, a location renowned for the rearing of the Lusitanian horse and for its historical and royal connections.

The origins of Alter do Chão date back to Roman times when a settlement was established at the junction of three main artery roads. Roman archaeological remains have been discovered in the town including baths, a Roman house and a late Roman necropolis – the excavations can be visited by guests. Close to the town is the Roman Formosa Bridge, a National monument.

The 4-star Convento d’Alter Hotel is located in the centre of Alter do Chão and enjoys views over the town and one of its towers. This former 16th century Franciscan convent has been remodelled to offer comfortable and characterful guest accommodation. The rooms are simply decorated with dark wooden furnishings, many with original Azulejo wall tiles, and the original cloister is now the breakfast room.
