Sofia and Filipe’s fathers jointly bought this 1,660 hectares (4,100 acres) of wild landscape, some of which borders Lake Alqueva in 2000. It is not the standard Alentejo landscape of wide plains and rolling, gentle hills, as much of it consists of craggy, forested hills and hidden valleys with breathtaking views as far away as Beja (43km).

Since then Sofia and Filipe have established a wine estate which produces 600,000 bottles a year; have newly planted acres of cork and holme oaks and locally occurring stone pines (umbrella pines) to harvest the pine nuts; have managed the forest to support the wildlife of wild boar, fallow deer, mouflon and 62 different bird species and created a wonderful lodge so what they have created can be enjoyed by their guests.

Personally and passionately managed by the two of them, this is a tribute to Alentejo’s local cuisine, olive oil, honey, jams, wines and high standard of accommodation.

As an introduction to this wonderful herdade, a guided tour of the hidden areas of this vast estate, with chances to see wild boar, mouflon and deer is included in the holiday price.
