Overview

Introduction

Malmö, bordered by the waters of the Öresund strait, has a youthful energy, exciting architecture, history and Scandinavian style. With 280,000 inhabitants Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and offers guests the possibility to experience the best of both worlds: small city vibrancy, hospitality and culture alongside the peaceful tranquillity and unspoiled nature of the surrounding Skåne countryside.

Hire a bike and explore the parks and squares of the city, visit museums and art galleries, cruise the canal by sightseeing boat, enjoy a delicious local meal in one of the cities many restaurants and bars – the largest concentration in Sweden, relax on the 2.5km sandy beach of Ribersborg, discover the newest district of the town, Västra Hamnen with its trendy eateries and iconic landmark, the Turning Torso, or take the train across the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark located across the water – the choice is yours!

Malmö was declared a Fairtrade city, the first in Sweden, in 2006; a title that has been embraced by residents and businesses alike. Throughout the city shops, restaurants and cafes are producing and promoting ethically and locally sourced goods.

Self-guided tours highlighting the transformation of Malmo from an industrial city to an ecologically conscious community, are available from the tourist board.

Relaxing Environments in Malmo

Malmö is locally known as the ’City of Parks’ thanks to its abundance of green spaces. A favourite of the Sunvil team is the Slottsparken in the heart of the city, with its canalside trails and excellent cafe serving organic, home-made treats. Neighbouring the park are the City Museum, Art Museum and the National History Museum, housed in Malmöhus Castle - the oldest remaining Renaissance castle in Scandinavia.

Västra Hamnen, the Western harbour of Malmö, is a pleasant juxtaposition of canals, beachfront areas and trendy eateries. From Västra Hamnen there are stunning views of the Öresund Bridge, which arches its way over to the Danish coastline - For the best views go to the Luftkastellet lookout point or take a guided tour to the 54th floor of the Turning Torso, Sweden’s tallest building measuring 190m.

Malmö is one of the few cities in the world, where you can enjoy fine sandy beaches. The 2.5km, Ribersborg beach, within the city limits, offers just that and the perfect escape from city life.

Copenhagen

A 40-minute journey by train will take you across the spectacular Öresund Bridge – the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe, to Denmark, a great opportunity to spend the day in Copenhagen.

The City of Malmo

Over the past decade, the city of Malmö has undergone a dramatic transformation, including the redevelopment of it’s once bustling port and the building of the Öresund Bridge, connecting Malmö with Copenhagen.

Yet for all of this expansion, Malmö remains a small, friendly and pleasant city where almost everything is located within easy walking distance.

The historic centre of Malmö is centred around three squares – Stortorget, Lilla Torg and Gustav Adolfs Torg, which together form a charming cobblestone district where locals and tourists come to eat, drink and shop.

Surrounding the squares is the largely, pedestrianised shopping district of the city. Here you will find the Form/Design Centre which showcases exhibitions on architecture, design, industrial design and handicraft; as well as big name Swedish retailers and international brands. Malmö has some 800 shops and counting. For those searching for something a little different, the district of Möllevången is worthy of a visit. Stroll among the market stalls, delicatessens - specialising in local and international foods – and boutique shops.
