In search of the Northern Lights at the ICEHOTEL

The rooftop of Europe lies directly below the Auroral oval, a band of geomagnetic activity that surrounds the earth. NASA refers to this belt as “a footprint in the Earth’s atmosphere’, under which your chances of sighting the Northern Lights are intensified. The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi is beneath the Auroral oval and observations of Mother Nature’s greatest display can be enjoyed from its doorstep - as experienced recently by Dave from our specialist Scandinavian team. Away from the artificial lights of the ICEHOTEL and her environs, the Arctic wilderness is plunged into darkness and provides the optimum conditions for a sighting of your own. The Aurora Borealis can be observed in the skies above the ICEHOTEL between September and April and we can take you there. Our three night break is merely one example of the holidays that we can tailor-make for you. Call our destination experts on 020 8758 4722 for further information and inspiration.

Northern Lights photography tour

Tonight you will sleep in sub zero temperatures (between -5°C and -8°C) in the ICEHOTEL 365 (from Dec-Apr we recommend a room in the temporary ICEHOTEL structure for you). Your bed for the evening has been specially made from ice and snow and is insulated by a mattress and topped with reindeer skins. Your duvet for the night is a thermal sleeping bag. Before settling down for the night, we have included a Northern Lights photography tour for you. This 4 1/2 hour excursion, led by a local guide, will take you away from the intruding lights of human civilisation to a location where conditions for catching the lights are at their best (weather permitting). Whilst waiting for the Lady Aurora to make her appearance on the night sky, you will be given instructions on how to capture the phenomenon on camera -instructions that you can use during the rest of your holiday.

Choose from one of the many excursions offered by the property (pre-bookable through Sunvil) - dog sled tours, ice sculpting, sauna experiences and horse riding to name but a few, or just relax in the hotel lounge and in the tranquillity of Jukkasjarvi. Tonight, you will depart the ICEHOTEL by private snowmobile and will transfer to a traditional log cabin beautifully situated on the edge of the River Torne. This is your accommodation for the night. Here, you can relax around a roaring fire or take your front row seat outside for the Northern Lights. This is an intimate, rustic experience, away from artificial lights, which includes a three course evening meal and breakfast.Overnight at a wilderness camp near Jukkasjarvi.

In Lapland, the sauna is the heart of the home, a place for peacefulness, relaxation and meditation. During this 2 1/2 hour experience you will gain the skills to sauna like a Scandinavian. You can even take an icy dip in the river if you desire.Overnight at the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi.
