The Kardamyla Hotel is directly on the beach of this north coast village at the head of a deep bay, and is a sister hotel to the Kyma in Chios Town. Guests for either can therefore take the opportunity to experience another aspect of the island at minimal cost by spending a few nights at the other hotel during their stay (easily arranged locally, see below).
The hotel has 32 rooms on its upper two floors (there is no lift). All ours directly face the sea and have full sea views. The hotel is popular with Greek families during July and August and has a number of family suites (two twin rooms sharing a bathroom).
The ground floor houses a large lounge and breakfast area (although this is usually taken on the terrace). Free tea and coffee is available here throughout the day. If you would like to have lunch or dinner at the hotel terrace this can be arranged with delivery from a local taverna.
The sand-pebble beach has free sun beds for hotel guests (shade provided by a row of tamarisk trees) - and use of canoes is also free of charge - but can be exposed when the meltemi blows. However there are other more sheltered beaches nearby, such as Nagos a short drive away to the west.
The hotel is undeniably old fashioned - the 70s architecture is a bit of a giveaway - and could do with some refurbishment but is eminently suitable for a relaxed seaside stay in a very informal Greek atmosphere, and as a friendly base from which to explore northern Chios by car.
This part of the island has been home to some of the island's wealthy ship-owning families for generations, as reflected in some of the impressive old mansions to be found in the village. The harbour is a 10 minute walk and has a couple of decent fish tavernas.
The upper village of Ano Kardamyla is 3 kms inland at the head of the valley, higher up on the slopes of Mount Grias, and is worth a visit for its traditional atmosphere and architecture.
Discover Chios. Guests staying at the Kyma or the Kardamyla Hotel have a couple of flexible options to enable them to see more of the island at a reasonable cost. Either a split-stay between the Kyma and Kardamyla Hotel or a fly drive staying north and south. See tabs above for details.
