Overview

Introduction

For those who recall visiting the smaller Greek islands 30 years ago, this welcoming traditional island will bring back emories of how things used to be! Lying just a few miles off Karpathos' south western tip, rocky Kassos is one of the remoter islands of the Dodecanese and little visited. The capital is called Fry (pronounced 'free'). It is a little scruffy but overwhelmingly friendly, and has a most attractive fishing harbour. Real Greece at her best!

Lying just a few miles off Karpathos' south western tip, rocky Kassos is one of the remoter islands of the Dodecanese chain and little visited. You will certainly find a genuine (and very Greek) small-island atmosphere here.

The capital is called Fry (pronounced 'free'). It is a little scruffy but overwhelmingly friendly, and has a most attractive fishing harbour called Bouka, overlooked by the church of Aghios Spiridon. Above Bouka is a pair of good local tavernas, and you will find a half dozen others in the village as well as the usual cafes and small shops, but some are only open in the peak season.

Kassos is not really the island for beaches but you can swim from a small strip of sand and shingle a 5-10 minute walk to the east of the port. However, in season (end-June to early September) taxi boats run the short distance to the uninhabited off-shore islets of Armathia and Makronisi which boast some fine sand and turquoise waters.

There are five villages on Kassos linked by a circular road - they are close enough together to be able to tour on foot in a day. Outside this area you will mainly encounter only sheep, goats and shepherds.

Kassos has two old monasteries to explore - Ayios Mamas has a particularly remote and dramatic location, perched vertiginously on the mountain above the sea.

Foreign tourism has made little impact on Kassos. For those who recall visiting the smaller Greek islands 30 years ago, this welcoming traditional island will bring back memories of how things used to be!

Representative

We do not have a representative on Kassos. The hoteliers will happily provide local information and our main agent in Rhodes can always be contacted.

Getting There

Flight to Rhodes from a range of UK airports and onward domestic flight to Kassos (80 mins via Karpathos - seasonal flights also possible from Athens). Then a taxi transfer to accommodation (5 mins.). On your return the reverse applies. Based on 2020 Rhodes-Kassos schedules, flights were in the mornings on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and in the afternoons on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Should your flights not connect then an overnight hotel will be arranged in Rhodes Town with transfers.

Multi-Centre Options

With any other island served by flights to Rhodes, which is most of the Dodecanese chain. Karpathos is the easiest option as it is just a short 20 min. hop by air. However please note that for the other islands mid-centre transfers are likely to involve an overnight hotel before the ferry the following morning, as the flight from Kassos this year (2020) is in the late afternoon.

Claire Kalatzis

Claire joined us in 2005 after having spent 6 years in Lesbos running her own business teaching English, where she married a Greek. The economic crisis in Greece forced them to return to the UK. Alongside day to day reservations, Claire is also mother goose to our 30 or so overseas representatives in Greece and works very closely with Graeme, our overseas manager in Greece, to arrange for their interviewing and training. Understandably she loves Alonissos.
