Holidays to Kastellorizo

Overview

Introduction

Kastellorizo is the most south-easterly island of the Dodecanese, and one of the smallest. It lies very close to Turkey – the town of Kas is but 3 miles across the strait. The main port is called Mandraki. A natural horseshoe-shaped harbour, Kastellorizo (like Symi and Halki) enjoyed a wealthy sea-faring past, as is reflected in its handsome neoclassical harbour mansions now slowly being restored.

The island has beautiful clean seas and is wonderful for snorkelling. The town has little beach, but you can swim from a lido straight into the clearest of water. Taxiboats run to other swimming spots, as well as to an impressive sea cave and the islet of Rho. Day-trips to Kas, which has a lively bazaar, are also popular.

Getting There

Flights from London Gatwick, Manchester and a range of regional airports via Rhodes. Onward domestic flight (40 mins) or ferry (2hrs 20 mins to 5 hrs depending on the boat) to Kastellorizo. Please note that local transfers on Kastellorizo are not supplied - it is a 7 minute walk from the ferry dock around the harbour to the hotel, or a short taxi ride from the airport. It will probably be necessary to overnight in Rhodes in one direction due to poor flight connections.
