Overview

Introduction

The seaside village of Diakopto is famous for the Odontos (rack) railway, which connects it to Kalavrita, 1 hour away. Built between 1885 and 1895, a journey on the Odontos train is considered one of the finest rail trips in Europe. Over 22.3km the railway climbs to 720m at a maximum gradient of 17.5% and passes through the Vouraikos gorge, over waterfalls and bridges, past overhanging cliff walls, and through tunnels cut into the rock. The views are spectacular. The famous monastery of Mega Spileon, moulded into the walls of a great cave, is also a nearby attraction and should not be missed. As are the monastery of Aghia Lavra and the Kastria Cave of the Lakes.
