Overview

Introduction

The historic site of Olympia, along with that of Delphi, are the most celebrated sanctuaries of ancient Greece. Its name is synonymous with the country and is renowned as the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Less-known was ancient Olympia's position as a national shrine to the Greeks and as the custodian of many treasures of art and architecture. Today, visitors to the site can explore the ancient stadium, where athletes trained and competed in years gone by; visit the fascinating Olympic Games museum and admire the ornate sculptures and archaeological remains at the Temple of Zeus, reputed to be the oldest Doric building in the world. 


Olympia is situated in the Elis valley, through which runs the River Alpheus, and is the gateway to a region of unspoiled natural beauty and unrivalled history. The Temples of Apollo Epikourios and Aprodite are within a short drive, as is the Chlemoutsi Castle. For nature lovers, there are river valleys, waterfalls and lagoons to discover and enjoy.
