With mile-upon-mile of palm fringed golden shores, you would be forgiven for thinking that Sao Tome and Principe is solely a destination for beach lovers. This could not be further from the truth. The densely forested landscape and nutrient-rich waters hide a pristine environment that is just waiting to be discovered by outdoor enthusiasts.
Our 9 night activity holiday has been handcrafted for those looking for the perfect blend of relaxation and exhilaration on their vacation.
Board Basis: Bed & Breakfast, Half Board
Day 1 - Lisbon
On arrival at Lisbon airport you will be transferred to the Heritage As Janelas Verdes Hotel in the centre of the Portuguese capital. We have featured this delightful boutique property for two decades; it is very comfortable, has a homely atmosphere and the rooftop terrace affords wonderful views over the Tagus river and Lisbon’s docks.

Day 2 - Free time in Lisbon
Opportunity to explore the renowned historical and cultural sites, discover the city’s gastronomic delights (we love the Mercado da Ribeira, it may be Lisbon’s most famous food market but deservedly so), climb the hill to the Castelo de Sao Jorge for splendid views or enjoy a sightseeing tour with a local guide.
In our opinion, the further away from the beaten-track you wander the better Lisbon becomes - atmospheric restaurants, live music venues, street art and independent galleries and boutiques. Put down your guide book and follow your senses, you will be rewarded, we promise!

Today, after breakfast, you will depart on your journey to the neighbouring island of Principe, 35 minutes by air. On arrival you will be transferred to Bom Bom resort on the north coast of the island. This charming retreat offers cottage-style accommodation along two stretches of golden sand beach. It is a tranquil setting that calls out for you to relax and unwind. Within an hour you will feel any tensions ease and your pace of life slow.
Afternoon at leisure at Bom Bom. Explore the island on foot, a natural park; make use of the complimentary snorkels, kayaks and paddle boards, take a swim in the turquoise waters or just read your book and absorb the surrounding scene.

Day 5 - Boat Trip to the Bay of Needles
To truly appreciate the beauty and drama of Príncipe island you need to observe the land from the sea. On today’s three hour boat trip you will journey along the west coast of the island and enjoy some of the most spectacular views. The Bay of Needles, so called because of the phonolite towers rising up out of the skyline will give you an experience of nature in its purest state. With local guides onboard you can gain an authentic insight into the destination.

Day 6 - Explore Principe Tour
The cultural history of Príncipe is fascinating. Today your guide will lead you on an exploration of the island, its former plantations, charming capital and its rural communities. It is a tour that will excite your senses - savour the aromas of herbs and medicinal plants, taste the local food products (jams, tropical muesli, chocolate, grilled fish, breadfruit and bananas for example), and take-in the breathtaking views of mountain peaks and colourful harbours.

Day 7 - Turtle Watching (Sept-Apr)
Day at leisure at Bom Bom. If you hold a PADI dive certificate, why not book a dive locally? Alternatively, use the available kayaks, paddle boards and snorkelling equipment to explore independently.
In the early evening, you will be transferred to a nearby turtle conservation area where you will get to learn about the three species of turtle who nest on the island - green turtle, hawksbill and leatherback. You will learn about the work being undertaken locally to preserve their habitats for generations to come and to educate residents as to their role in the protection of the species. If you are lucky enough to watch a female laying her eggs or her young being hatched, it is certainly an unforgettable experience.

Day 8 - Hike Cascata O Que Pipi
The raw and wild hiking trails on Príncipe are ideal for those who wish to scratch under the surface of the destination (due to uneven surfaces, a good level of fitness and suitable clothing is required). On our chosen three hour hike you will follow a trail through the rainforest to the O Que Pipi Waterfall. In the dense vegetation you will experience peace and quiet, only disturbed by the rustling of leaves and birdsong. Time is allowed for a refreshing dip in the waterfall pool.
