Copan Honudas Extension Holiday Ideas

Copan is set in the foothills of Western Honduras, just 7 miles from the Guatemalan border. The town is paved in cobblestone and lined with adobe buildings with red-tiled roofs. The dry season in Copan is from December until April, with March and April being the hottest and driest months.

The impressive ruins of Copan are one of Central America’s major Mayan sites and certainly the most significant in Honduras. They have been designated a World Heritage Site. In November 1839, explorers John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood discovered Copan engulfed in jungle.

In the 1930’s, the Carnegie Institute cleared the grounds and rebuilt the glorious hieroglyphic stairway and, since then, the ruins have been maintained by the government. The stelae are deeply incised and carved with faces, figures and animals. The most atmospheric buildings are those still half-buried under roots and grass.

Copan is very close to the border of Guatemala, so it can be easily visited en route to the Lake Izabal/Rio Dulce area or as a day or overnight trip from Antigua or Guatemala City. The easiest way to reach Copan is by air in a small single propeller plane which takes 35 minutes from Guatemala City and then a 25 minute mini-bus ride to the site. Take off time may alter due to weather conditions.  If going onto to Rio Dulce by land, upon arrival in Honduras, please ask your driver to take your passports to the immigration office in order to have your passport stamped as having entered Honduras, if it has not already been stamped since landing. This will save lengthy conversations and complications with border control on your exit! (not necessary if you are returning into Guatemala by plane). Entry and exit fees are payable locally.
