The pretty lakeside resort of Pucon is situated in the northern part of the Lake District region. This is the heart of Chile’s adventure tourism industry - hiking, trekking, mountain biking, fishing, horse-riding and white water rafting are all available here.
Playa Grande is Pucon’s black sand beach which extends 4km east from La Peninsula to the Rio Pucon Delta. There are beach volleyball courts, rowing boats and windsurfs for hire. 25 km from Pucon is the quieter working town of Villarrica that shares it name with the smouldering, snow capped volcano that dominates its skyline and the lake on which it lies. The volcanic terrain has resulted in an abundance of hot springs, many of them in the Pucon area. Other places to visit nearby are the reserves of Santuario Cani, Huerquehue, the Villarrica National Park and Lake Caburgua.
This area is ideal for self-drive, with possible trips to national parks, lakes, waterfalls and hot springs. The region can be easily combined with that of Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas which is a 4 hour drive away. The high season is January and February and the area can be somewhat crowded, as it is the top summer vacation spot for the Chileans. However, it should also be noted that in May and June some of the restaurants and shops close. Flights into Temuco airport from Santiago take approximately 1 1/4 hours. It is then a further 1 1/2 hour drive from Temuco to reach Pucon (car can be collected at the airport).

Chile was made for lovers of the outdoors and wonderful natural scenery. Very few countries can offer deserts, volcanoes, glaciers, snow capped mountains and emerald-green lakes. Away from these places, I feel very privileged to have also travelled to two of Chile’s extremities - Cape Horn and Easter Island; contrasting destinations but equally special.
