Vagar and Mykines Holidays
Vagar and Mykines holidays
The international airport is on Vágar, one of the central islands and from there to Tórshavn, the capital, on the largest island of Streymoy is a 45 minute drive. Mykines is easily reached in 1 hour by small ferry from beautiful Sørvagur.
Vágar and Mykines are the two western islands. Sørvagur itself is a small village with a charming harbour and is from where you can catch a ferry to the island of Mykines. Mykines is said to be the “paradise of birds” referred to by the seafaring Irish monk, St. Brendan, in the sixth century. Puffins nest here in abundance in the summer and there is a large colony of gannets. Vágar has some fabulous scenery, beautiful lakes and is good for hiking and bird watching. There are also many links to the Second World War – the airport here was founded by the British and there is a small museum dedicated to the history of the British occupation of the islands.
