Overview

Introduction

The island of Krk is Croatia’s largest island together with the neighbouring island of Cres. In recent years, geologists claim to have measured both and have come up with this! Even so, from the top of the island just north of the airport to the southernmost point at Baska, it is around 40 kilometres and around 45 minutes drive.

It is great that the island of Krk has its own airport called Rijeka – not the same place as the city of Rijeka on the mainland coast. The village of Omisalj is near to the airport. If landing at Rijeka, visitors are already on Krk and under 35 minutes drive to any point on the coast.

Other airports are convenient too as Krk is connected by a road bridge. From Zagreb airport it is just under two hours drive and from Pula airport 1 hour 40 minutes,

Krk is often called the golden island because of glorious sunsets and it is where many people from Zagreb have a summer holiday home as it offers easy access via the road bridge connecting to the mainland.

There is a ferry connecting Krk to the beautiful island of Rab to the south and a summer catamaran service connecting it to Zadar in the North Dalmatia region to the south, making it a perfect two centre holiday option.

Krk is very proud of its culture and you will see the word “bastina” often, the word for heritage in Croatian. This is the cradle of the Glagolitic alphabet and there are monuments to it, and it is where the Frankopans built their amazing structures. It is also the only place really in the Kvarner region where wine is produced – from vines in the valleys near Vrbnik on the east coast (rest of Kvarner region is a little too hilly). This famous Zlahtina white wine is also the amazing “sea champagne”.

Did you know?

  • The island has a distinct form of pasta called “surlice”, a kind of curled tube and is served in many places in Punat, often featuring octopus ragout
  • Olives from the Punat area are good and there is a festival called Olive Days of Krk
  • There is a wine bar in Krk Town named Volsonis that is partly encased in the city walls. When it was being refurbished as a bar, extensive Roman remains were discovered and these have been restored and are now a feature – including an aqueduct on the lower level leading to the beautiful garden
  • There are many tours available including “the Frankopan trail” and a network of self guided marked walking and cycling paths that cross near Punat

One of the most beautiful places on the island is definitely Krk Town with its gorgeous old town. Take a walk through the historic centre with its labyrinth of stone alleys, small boutiques and galleries. I would also suggest visiting Casa del Padrone on Krk town's Riva and enjoying a slice of the island's local delicacy - Krčka kneginja cake.
