Introduction

The town/city of Olot is located on a plain surrounded by the mountain ranges of Valenti. The town/city has a population of around 35,000. The old town dates from the 9th century and has a rich cultural heritage with some very interesting, brightly painted buildings. Painting, sculpture and ceramics are the main elements in the art of Olot. Cafes and restaurants abound, especially around the main square (Placa Major).

The town is surrounded by 4 volcanoes (don’t worry, they last erupted 12,000 years ago) and lies within the Parc Natural de la Zona Volcanica de la Garrotxa and is an excellent base from which to visit the park on foot or by bicycle. From the top of one of the four volcanoes (Montsacopa) there are some panoramic views over the town. The volcanic area of Garrotxa has 30 volcano cones and a very rich red/rusty soil as a result.

Olot is an easy cycle ride to the fascinating beech forest which lies within the park and also only a 10 km ride to the medieval village of Santa Pau. Girona is 50 KM away and can be reached by bicycle along the greenway which was once the narrow gauge railway that joined the two.

Olot is an excellent base from which to visit both the Pyrenees, the national park and Girona.
