Introduction

Pyrgos is the largest village in the very beautiful, mountainous Tyllirias region of Cyprus on the northern foothills of the Troodos range. There is a Kato Pyrgos which is the seafront village and Pano Pyrgos the original and upper part of the village.

Pyrgos is approximately 77 km from Nicosia, 95 km (two-hour drive) from Paphos Airport and an hour’s drive from Polis along the northern coastline of the island. From all directions, the drive to Pyrgos is very picturesque.

The village dates from the Hellenic Period (325 BC). The name seems to have originated from the presence of a small Venetian tower (pyrgos in Greek) located on a hill that dominates the area. Some say that the name of the region came as a result of the number of immigrants from the Greek island of Tilos in the third century AD.

There are several churches split between the lower and upper village including the small Byzantine church of Panagia Galoktisti, associated with a local miracle and one of the oldest on the island.

The lower village has several good fish tavernas supplied straight from the tiny fishing harbour, several mini markets, and a bank. There are plenty of walks in the area, a nature trail recently opened by the nearby villages of Mansoura and Mosfilia and very good swimming from a selection of sandy beaches. This is also a perfect base from which to access the Troodos mountains - a perfect sea and mountain location.
