Introduction

A beautiful, picturesque village (population approximately 1,500) with a medieval heart at the centre of the volcanic Baixa Garrotxa region and an excellent location for walks into the Parc Natural de la Zona Volcanica de la Garrotxa.

Santa Pau is an ‘Artistic Historical Monument’. Its main square, the 13th century Placa Major, once an important cattle market, is encircled by collonaded stone buildings. The village surrounds the ruin of the enormous castle which has recently been purchased by the local municipality and will, no doubt, eventually be restored. There are views from the ancient walls and narrow lanes criss-cross the medieval village.

Santa Pau is set at the heart of the Baixa Garrotxa volcanic area and there are various walks that can be followed to discover the volcanic craters of which there are thirty in the area. Maps are readily available. The Croscat volcano, as a result of a quarry for lava stone, has part of its lava flow exposed and this is not covered by vegetation. The black lava flow has oxidized giving striking orange and red colours.

A 6 km walk or cycle from Santa Pau takes you to the mysterious La Fageda d’en Jorda, a magical beech wood forest which should not really be growing at such a low altitude but stands on the lava flow from the Croscat volcano.

Santa Pau is a wonderful base, especially as the atmospheric 8 bedroomed Hotel Cal Castre which we feature is at its centre. Besalu, the magnificent, well preserved and living medieval town with its 11th century fortified bridge is a half hour drive and the attractive town of Olot is 15 minutes away.

Noel Josephides

Noel is Sunvil’s Chairman. Born in Cyprus in 1948, he joined John der Parthog at Sunvil in 1973. Before that and following university, he spent 3 years as a trainee buyer at C&A Modes and then worked for a large Cypriot builder and property developer for whom he set up a London Office buying electrical components for the Middle East and importing lemons from orchards in Cyprus. He still researches new destinations for Sunvil and is heavily involved in matters relating to the travel industry. He is a previous chairman of ABTA, a long standing director and previous chairman of The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) and former chairman of The Travel Foundation - the travel industry’s sustainability charity.
