Rome

Rome holidays

Ideally placed in the very heart of the region and, indeed the country, is Rome, the capital and centre of government, separating the north from the south. The sights to see are many, including the magnificent Colosseum, the Pantheon, St Peter’s Square and Basilica, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and the animated Piazza Navona. There is so much to do that the longest stay is always too short.

All roads lead to Rome, as does the main railway system, which makes day trips from the capital an easy option. Within easy reach is Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli (40km east) and the well-preserved Roman site at Ostia Antica (26km southwest), a former ancient port. Further afield, and accessible by car, are the notable Benedictine monasteries of Subiaco and Montecassino.

Two international airports serve the region. Fiumicino (Leonardo Da Vinci airport) is on the southwest coast connected by rail to the centre of Rome which receives scheduled airlines and Ciampino, which is used by charter airlines, located 16km southeast of Rome. A bus links Ciampino to the centre of Rome.
