Hunting the Aurora Borealis in Kirkenes
At 70° latitude the frontier town of Kirkenes is as far north as Point Barrow in Alaska and situated directly under the Aurora oval. It is the easternmost town on the Norwegian mainland – just 10km from the Russian border and further east than Istanbul and St Petersburg – and is also the most culturally diverse.

Return flights to Kirkenes airport (via Oslo Gardermoen) with SAS Scandinavian Airlines; return private transfers; Bed & Breakfast accommodation and excursions as detailed.
Travel to Kirkenes during the winter months and you will get a tantalising glimpse into life on the remote shores of the Barents Sea. You can also experience the Polar Nights, from 27 November to 16 January, when the sun does not rise above the horizon and under the clear starry sky watch the Northern Lights flicker across the sky.
This four night itinerary offers the best of Kirkenes and includes: A visit to the Snowhotel; a snowmobile tour; a dog-sled tour and a King Crab safari.
On arrival at Kirkenes airport, transfer to the Hotel.
Morning at leisure in Kirkenes. In the afternoon, depart Kirkenes for a 4-hour snowmobile excursion across the tranquil wilderness. The tour will include the opportunity to drive the ‘jet-ski’ of the winter landscape and to enjoy the passing scene as a passenger.
Snow Hotel and dog-sled tour - Each winter, close to Kirkenes, a carefully sculpted structure – made of ice and snow – takes shape. This is the Kirkenes Snow Hotel. During your 1 1/2 hour excursion (departing Kirkenes at 13:00) you will have the opportunity to explore the Snow rooms and Snow Bar, visit the neighbouring reindeer park and enjoy lunch, beside a roaring fire in the hotel’s restaurant. Return to Kirkenes. In the early evening depart Kirkenes on a husky dog-sled experience ‘hunting the Northern Lights’. Feel the calm and experience the silence as your team of dogs gently pad their way across the snow-covered terrain under the cover of the Arctic sky. On a clear night, the undulating ribbons and shimmering curtains of the Aurora Borealis may dance on the cosmic wind overhead.
King crab safari - Morning at leisure in Kirkenes. In the afternoon try your hand at fishing for King Crabs. King crabs flourish on the floor of the icy Barents Sea. On this 3 hour excursion you are transferred to the frozen fishing grounds by snowmobile sledge before having the opportunity to fish through a hole in the ice. Your catch will be served for lunch by a warm fire.
After breakfast, transfer to Kirkenes airport for your return flight to the UK.
