Aeolian Islands
In a cave in Lipari, Aeolus kept the winds captive, and he gave Ulysses a fair breeze in a pigskin bag. If you like islands, you will like Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli and the rest.
Lipari, with 15 square miles, is the largest of the Aeolian islands, and a good base for excursions with frequent boats (punctual) and buses (unpunctual). Its people are very friendly and helpful. The island is particularly remarkable for its variety of scenery and colour: a jagged coastline surrounded by unpolluted waters and an array of colours from the green vegetation and white pumice stones to the black and red volcanic rocks.
Holidays In Lipari
Lipari town has an ancient acropolis crowned by a castle, a cathedral and a fine museum (the swimming off the rocks below is a bonus). The choice of restaurants and trattorias is reasonably good, with plenty of freshly-caught fish to be had.
Fifteen minutes on the bus brings you to Canneto, a quiet seaside village with a superb, safe bathing beach nearby (known as ‘The White Beach’ from the pumice particles that form its sand).
On Vulcano (approximately half an hour by boat from Lipari) you may ‘take the cure’ in a sulphur pool, and wash off in a curious bubbling sea – catching, incidentally, more than a whiff of Vulcan himself at his bellows below! Or, at the day’s end, visit Stromboli and see one of the most active volcanoes on earth spill out its splendid fire.
