The hub of the city is the square, Plaza Grande, which hosts a number of important landmarks including the Cathedral San Ildefonso and the Government Palace.

Horse-drawn carriages jostle with cars, taxis, buses and locals strolling around the city centre. The scene becomes even more vibrant at weekends, when the main square and adjacent streets close to traffic and become outdoor venues for free live music and dance performances and also crafts stalls. Local restaurants serve Yucatecan, Mexican and international cuisine.

When travelling between Mérida and the Riviera Maya, or as a day trip from Mérida, we recommend visiting the interesting and bustling small town of Izamal. Izamal is a quiet colonial gem and the main attraction is the Franciscan monastery that still stands today at the heart of the town.
