Quito is the capital city of Ecuador and located in the North of the Country, just 45km South of the Equator.

Situated at an altitude of 2850m this is the second highest city in Latin America (La Paz, Bolivia being the highest). Quito occupies a long, narrow stretch of land overlooked by Pichincha volcano (4794m) to the West with views of the green sweeping ‘Valle de los Chillos’ to the East. A picturesque location, which enjoys a ‘Spring-like’ climate
most of the year.

The beautiful colonial, ‘old city’ was the first city in the World to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978. Stroll through the steep, narrow streets and cobbled plazas to find ornate churches, monasteries, mansions and pastel coloured balconied houses.

Since independence, Quito has gradually expanded to the North and South; the ‘new city’ to the North of the ‘old city’ has a different feel with broad avenues lined with private residences, embassies, parks, banks, shops, bars and restaurants.

Quito’s location enables visitors to take an interesting trip to ‘Mitad del Mundo’ (Middle of the World) where a monument marks the Equatorial Line and an exhibition centre and local museum are home to some fascinating facts.
