Khirokitia

Khirokitia holidays

The village of Khirokitia straddles a ridge overlooking a valley. It lies 2km west of the Neolithic ruins of Khirokitia which is a World Heritage Site. The famous battle of Khirokitia in 1426 between King Janus and the Mamluks chronicled by the ancient historian, Macheras, took place in the fields below the house. The battle marked the end of the Lusignian monarchy in Cyprus. Ruins of the ancient Castle of the Templars’ Commandery can be seen in the valley, as can the Byzantine Church of the Virgin.

The village has a bank, butcher, grocery shops and coffee shop. Governor’s Beach, restaurants and the fish tavernas of Zygi are a ten minute drive.
