Holidays to Nisyros

Overview

Introduction

The unique and atmospheric island of Nisyros, just an hour by boat from Kos, is distinguished by the pair of large volcanic craters at its centre which are still active (albeit currently dormant – the last eruption was in 1888!). The volcanic soil makes the island’s interior much greener than nearby Tilos or Halki, and a variety of walking trails offer fabulous views of the island’s craters and neighbouring islands.

It is of course a must to explore the volcano, the moonlike crater floor and its bubbling mud pools (but please don’t fall in!). Legend has it that the seismic sound effects are the groaning of a giant defeated in battle by Poseidon. We recommend that smartphone users download the Nisyros Volcano App available from Google Play or the Apple App store.

Mandraki is the main port and has typically narrow stone-paved lanes lined with whitewashed houses and vibrantly painted balconies. There is the usual array of harbourside tavernas but the best are to be found around the small town square of Kambos. Mandraki is guarded by a 14th century Knights’ castle, containing a monastery within the fortress walls above.

Nisyros is easy to explore as it is circular and only some 8 kms in diameter (the caldera width alone measures 3-4 kms). Elsewhere you will come across a handful of tiny villages, other monasteries, churches, thermal spas, fortifications dating from 7BC, and free-roaming pigs!

Getting there

Flights to Kos. Then taxi to port (20 mins) and ferry (50 - 90 mins – ticket provided). Short transfer to accommodation. On the return the reverse applies. Also possible via Rhodes with longer ferry transfers (min. 2 hrs.) An overnight hotel may be required on arrival.

Representative

We do not have a representative on Nisyros and transfers are unescorted. The hoteliers will happily provide local information and our main agent in Rhodes can always be contacted.

Multi-Centre Options

Nisyros has quick and direct ferry connections with Tilos and Halki several times a week. Other islands in the Dodecanese chain, including the islands of Kalymnos, Telendos, Lipsi, Leros, Patmos, have less frequent direct connections and may need to transfer via Kos.
