Introduction

On the west coast of the Peloponnese, a 50 minute drive from Kalamata Airport, lies the bay of Kyparissia and a sandy 65 km beach, one of the longest in Europe. It is not solely the beach that makes this such an appealing destination. Kyparissia itself has a long history and is mentioned by Homer in the Iliad. Today it is a picturesque small town of some 5000 souls, with cobblestone narrow streets, attractive shaded squares, a medieval castle and harbour.

There are many other attractions in the area. Within around an hour's drive is not only Ancient Olympia but also the lesser known (and highly regarded) Temple of Bassae; the Neda Gorge leads to waterfalls tumbling down into rock pools - a boon for those needing a refreshing swim after a dusty hike; the distinguished beach of Voidakilia not far from historic Pylos; King Nestor's Palace (also of Iliad fame); the large and exciting city of Ancient Messene, still undergoing excavation; and more waterfalls at Polylimniou.

Inland are narrow twisting roads, forested hillsides and mountain villages - a very traditional landscape.

Our hotel here offers a wonderful and most comfortable base overlooking the sea, from which to explore the whole of this fascinating and largely little known area.
