Holidays to Ubeda

As with Baeza, the city held considerable importance under Abd ar-Rahman II (822-852) and flowered once again during the rule of Charles V when many important buildings were built, notably by the architect Vandelvira.  The plan of the city, however, remained as it had been under Moorish rule.

Ubeda’s most outstanding feature is its monumental Vazques de Molina Square which is surrounded by imposing Renaissance buildings.  The town’s conference hall is housed in the late 16th century Hospital de Santiago. The Parador of Ubeda is housed in a 16th century palace.  In total there are 48 outstanding monuments in the town which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.

The town is surrounded by seas of olive trees and is a perfect stop for those interested in art, culture, history and good food.  In May and June the town holds its annual music and dance festival featuring music and dance from flamenco to opera.
