Introduction

Burgos was founded in 884 and in the 13th and 14th centuries it was the historic capital of Castile. Located on the banks of the Arlanzon River at an altitude of 856 metres, it is very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

The current population of Burgos is around 200,000. It is the provincial capital of the region and part of the autonomous community of Castile and Leon. It is just over a 2 hour drive from Madrid Airport and 2 and a half hours by high speed (RENFE) train. The city has a large, medieval historic centre and is surrounded by the Fuentes Blancas and Paseo de la Isla parks.

The cathedral of Burgos was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Construction of this most beautiful church was started in in 1221 and carried on through the 13th and 14th centuries. The 1180 Monastery of Las Huelgas Reales and the Carthusian Miraflores Monastery, both on the outskirts of the city, have to be visited and the historic centre features many medieval churches and palaces.

Burgos also houses the world’s unique Museum of Human Evolution which opened in 2010 and is one of the 10 most popular museums in Spain.

As with many cities in the Spanish interior, Burgos bore witness to many wars with the Moors, battles against Aragon and Leon, in campaigns against Napoleon and was a General Franco base during the Spanish Civil War. And don’t forget that the legendary El Cid, a formidable military leader, was brought up and educated in Burgos. He died in 1099 and is buried in Burgos Cathedral.

The city is quite a gastronomic centre and is best known for its much coveted white fresh cheese called Queso de Burgos.
