Ceara is the northernmost of the North Eastern states. It is a large state with 573 kilometres of coastline, much of it fabulous beaches, sand dunes and multi-coloured cliffs plunging into the sea. Here too, the beach buggy is king as much of the coastline can only be reached using this form of transport. Jericoacoara, one of the most famous beaches in the region, is 318 kilometres (4 hrs drive) northwest of Fortaleza, the state capital.
