Greece

Greece's coastline, stretching over 16,000km between the mainland and its islands, boasts a diverse range of beaches. From serene hideaways to vast stretches of sand, and even the smallest pebbled coves – Greece has it all.

Greece has set a new record this year with an impressive 617 Blue Flag beaches, making it the second-highest total of any country. Halkidiki, located on the northern side of Greece, has the most Blue Flag beaches, with the Dodecanese islands and Crete also earning high scores. Notably, Kefalonia and Lefkas in the Ionian islands also stand out for their pristine and well-organised beaches. Additionally, many Cycladic islands have been awarded Blue Flags, making Greece a top destination for beach lovers.

Croatia

Croatia is a top-tier destination for anyone looking for the most stunning beaches in Europe. With crystal-clear waters, gentle waves, and comfortable swimming temperatures all year round, it boasts over 80 beaches and 18 marinas that have received the Blue Flag. Some of the most breathtaking beaches in Croatia can be found in Zadar, Pula, Rovinj and the Dalmatia region.

Portugal

Portugal boasts some of Europe's most picturesque beaches, offering a variety of seaside getaways. From serene coves nestled at the base of sea cliffs to sandy islands surrounded by turquoise waters, Portugal's coastline has it all. Additionally, there are dune-backed expanses that lead to some of the world's most impressive surfing spots. In 2023, 432 Portuguese beaches and marinas were granted the Blue Flag, with the Northern region boasting 87 distinguished coastal and river beaches, which is five more than last year. Meanwhile, the Algarve has 86, the Central region has 47 beaches, the Alentejo region has 39, the Azores has 44, and Madeira has 16.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is world-renowned for its breathtaking beaches, which are a top tourist attraction. What sets this destination apart is its sustainable tourism model, which prioritises environmental conservation and social progress of local communities. Costa Rica's Blue Flag Ecological Awards is an excellent example of the country's dedication to maintaining its status as a preferred sun and beach destination for travellers.

Brazil

With a coastline that's largely sandy and dotted with coves, small islands and pools, Brazil is a haven for holidaymakers. While Rio is famous for its two beaches, there are several other amazing spots to explore for those seeking a more remote and undeveloped experience. The country's potential for sustainable tourism is on the rise, which is evident through the growing number of Blue Flag certified beaches and marinas. In 2023, over 40 coastal sites were awarded this prestigious recognition.

Chile

Chile might not be your first thought when it comes to beach destinations, but this long and narrow country boasts a Pacific Ocean shoreline that spans over 4,270 kilometres. Along this impressive coastline, you'll find plenty of beautiful sandy beaches worth visiting. Just 9km from Valparaiso, you'll find Vina del Mar – one of Chile's premier seaside resorts. Here, you'll also discover Reñaca beach, a stunning, award-winning beach that has earned the prestigious Blue Flag award.
