The city, founded in 1580, is set on the River Plate, across the water from the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo. It stretches along the banks of the estuary with its very fashionable northern, riverside suburbs of Olivos, Martinez, San lsidro and Tigre.

The Plaza de Mayo in the centre is where the main public buildings are grouped and the Calle Florida, Avenida Santa Fe and Plaza San Martin are the main shopping, hotel and theatre areas.

East of the centre is the stylish, renovated dock area of Puerto Madero and to the south, the older, interesting neighbourhoods of San Telmo and La Boca; full of restaurants, cafés, artists and antique shops.

To the north of the city is Palermo, a trendy district, off the usual tourist track and home to several parks & gardens and famous for its art galleries and fairs, designer shops, bars and bistros.

La Recoleta Cemetery
La Recoleta Cemetery is a truly unique place. This amazing “city of mausoleums”, is host to numerous elaborate marble sarcophagi, tree lined walkways and the grave of one of Argentina’s most recognisable names – Eva Peron.

It is home to the graves of some of the most influential and important people in Argentina’s history. You can wonder around the cemetery for hours marvelling at the various crypts containing presidents, military heroes, influential politicians and the rich and famous of Argentina’s past.
