More than a third of Panama is formed by protected natural reserves, dedicated to the conservation of the country’s ecosystems. Within these protected areas there are 13 National and Marine Parks and 1 International Park. Some are in the heart of the Panama City - a sweet juxtaposition between the natural and man-made world.
Although there are many to choose from, we recommend a visit to the Volcan Baru National Park. At 3,474 metres high, the towering Baru Volcano is the 12th highest peak in Central America. There are 7 craters and several walking trails suitable for all abilities. If you are an experienced hiker, you can make the journey to the summit from where marvellous vistas unfold.
Volcan Baru National Park is in the province of Chiriqui, a region renowned for its production of geisha coffee. This is one of the most sought after and expensive coffees in the world - so make sure to pick some up when you visit!
Panama City has been recognised by UNESCO as a Creative City in Gastronomy. Foodie or not, the Panamanian cuisine is guaranteed to excite your tastebuds with local flavours mixed with influences from Africa and Spain. For some of the best restaurants in the city, head to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Casco Antiguo. Try Ceviche, a classic seafood dish made of raw fish cured in citrus juices and spiced with chilli peppers. For something heartier, ask for the Ropa Vieja - a delicious, spiced beef dish.
Settled thousands of years ago by ancient civilisations, modern Panama boasts a rich cultural diversity where indigenous roots meet African heritage and Spanish influence.
A visit to Panama will expose you to colonial relics – including the oldest Spanish fort and the first European settlement in the Pacific. You can also visit El Caño Archaeological Park, the burial ground of an ancient civilisation and an ongoing excavation site.
