This was Zoe's first visit to Croatia and she had such a wonderful time that she is already planning her 2023 summer holiday to discover more of this beautiful country. The weather was still warm enough during the day for shorts and a t-shirt and to dine outside in the evening. There were less tourists in the old walled city making it more comfortable to explore the stunning architecture. Regardless of whether you are visiting Dubrovnik for the first time or the hundredth, the sense of awe never fails to descend when you set eyes on the beauty of the old town.
We took a bus to Dubrovnik Old Town from the hotel and the bus stop was literally outside the front door of our hotel! We could have taken a leisurely stroll but were told the bus was a lot quicker. You can use your contactless debit card on the bus or buy a ticket from the hotel reception. Buses here are very frequent and stop virtually outside the Old Town. As it was early October there were fewer tourists making it more comfortable to explore the town's wonderful architecture, churches and museums. It really was like taking a step back in time.
Lokrum Island is just a short boat trip from the old harbour so we spent the afternoon exploring the small beaches, woodlands and the botanical gardens. It was very pretty and a delightful and relaxing way to spend some time away from the afternoon heat of the medieval walled town just across the sea.
On our second day we took a cable car ride to the top of Mount Srd which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the old town and surrounding area. Tickets are available from the cable car kiosk, or from other ticket kiosks around the town. My tip - buy your ticket from a kiosk in the town, and make it known to the staff you have pre-bought, or you can get stuck in the queue to buy tickets from the cable car place itself. It’s also worth mentioning that when the cruise ships visit Dubrovnik during the summer, the queues can be very long!
Once you reach the top there is a museum which tells the story of the civil war in the 1990’s which is very moving. You can also book a buggy safari to explore the area and for the adrenaline junkies, rather than take the cable car back down you can zip line down!!
Dubrovnik is the perfect location to visit some of the many surrounding islands on a boat trip. We took a day trip to the Elaphites Islands of Kolocep, Sipan and Lopud. We couldn’t have picked a better day as the weather was wonderful and the sea a mirror-glass calm. The trip enabled you plenty of time to explore each island as well as time to have a swim if you wanted. We enjoyed a delicious lunch on board with fish and vegetables along with a glass of local wine. It was such a relaxing trip taking in the wonderful scenery as we sailed from island to island and something I would highly recommend during your stay in Dubrovnik.
During our stay in Dubrovnik we enjoyed some great meals and one that really made our trip was dinner in Nautika - voted 6th most romantic restaurant in the world in Conde Nast magazine. It’s in a great location just outside the city walls, with beautiful views of the Adriatic from your table. It had the biggest wine list I have ever seen, not just in the choice of wine available but the sheer size of the list - almost the size of a telephone directory!
My tip - to get the most of the views, go before sunset or it's dark and there is nothing to see and try to book as soon as you can.
This was a real fine dining experience and although quite expensive, it's perfect for a special celebration meal and one to end our memorable trip to this wonderful city.
