11th April 2008 and 1st October 2008 (1 or 2 Weeks)
Cyprus is a magnet to large numbers of migrating birds on their journeys between three continents. Sunvil Holidays are pleased to offer clients the opportunity to enjoy this fascinating spectacle accompanied by Bob Husband, a very experienced ornithological guide. Our Bird watching group will explore Cyprus’s varied habitats ranging from sun-baked salt lakes, bustling with Greater Flamingos, to the cool pine forests of the Troodos Mountains. These rise to over 6,000 feet and are the regular haunt of Griffon Vultures and several endemic sub-species (Crossbill, Short-toed Treecreeper, Scops Owl, Coal Tit and Jay) all potential candidates for full species status like the two existing endemics, Cyprus Warbler and Cyprus Pied Wheatear.
When searching for these species we should become familiar with the call of the Black Francolin (a specie often difficult to see outside Cyprus) and its near relative, the Chukar Partridge. Previous Sunvil groups logged all of these species plus Hoopoe, Roller, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Calandra Lark, Spectacled Warbler and many, many more. Designed for both beginners and the more experienced alike, as well as for folk holidaying on their own or with non-bird watching companions, the emphasis will be on leisurely exploration and sightseeing within reasonable travelling distance of our base, the small and friendly Phytos Inn in Geroskipou, Paphos. Should you wish to stay at another hotel but still join the group then this is also possible. Though we prefer everyone to be together for ease of administration.
A hire car is already included in the cost of the holiday and any further necessary transportation will be organised and payable locally. Please state when booking whether you would be willing to carefully drive a hire car for the benefit of others. There is a £50 charge for the bird watching.
Prior to departure, clients will be provided with an information pack including a species list and other helpful details to prepare for the trip. Apart from binoculars, no special equipment is needed to enjoy this holiday.
Based on Tuesday Luton to Paphos Departure.
