Guadalupe Holidays

Guadalupe holidays

Guadalupe, set in the northern region of Extremadura and 245 km (3 hrs) from Madrid Airport is a very pretty small town of around 2,000 inhabitants. By any standards this is a historic village, with its cobbled streets, traditional homes and historic monuments. However, what has bought Guadalupe fame and fortune is the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe dating from 1325 and the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe which was the most important Marian shrine in the medieval kingdom of Castile. Our Lady of Guadalupe harbours one of three Black Madonnas in Spain.

Holidays In Guadalupe

The monastery is spectacular and for 4 centuries the most powerful monastery in Spain.  It was here that the Spanish monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand signed the documents that authorised the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492. In that same year it symbolised the final expulsion of Muslim power from the Iberian Peninsula.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery was and still remains a centre of pilgrimage for the Western World and Latin America and one of the foremost tourist attractions in Spain.
