Vrbnik is situated on the east coast of the island of Krk. It is one of the oldest settlements on the island, first mentioned in 1100 and was fortified in the Middle Ages and part of the town walls can still be seen today. It is incredibly pretty and is nestled on a cliffside 50 metres above the sea, filled with stone houses in the labyrinth of charming narrow streets.
Once an important Glagolitic centre in the Middle Ages it is now best known for being home to a rather special white wine. In fact the wine’s official name includes the town’s name in it: Vrbnik Zlahtina. The vineyards cover the wide valley on the inland side of town and the white zlahtina grape is an indigenous variety known throughout Croatia. Families of wine makers continue the wine making tradition and many have opened their cellars for tours and tastings of the delicious white zlahtina alongside traditional island foods including air dried hams, sausage, honey and cheeses.
Some of the cellars even have a small rustic restaurant with seating inside and on terraces. Visitors to this part of Croatia would normally include Vrbnik when sightseeing on the island of Krk. They would take in the panoramic views of the Kvarner Bay, the medieval core of Vrbnik, the wine cellars for wine tasting, local konobas (tavernas) for delicious foods and – a stroll, perhaps sideways through Klancnic, which the Guinness Book of Records states is the narrowest street in the world.
Balconies and sleeping cats seem to be everywhere in Vrbnik, it is truly charming and is the closest spot, around an eight minute drive, to our featured property, the beautiful Villa Ca Veia. The villa is situated in a hamlet called Garica and has one small supermarket with Vrbnik being the closest small town.
If staying at Villa Ca Veia, Vrbnik is easily reached and has a fresh open market, a choice of bars and restaurants, a couple of supermarkets, a post office and chemist, wine shops and cellars and an excellent fish market down at the little port. Cars are not allowed into parts of the old town and there is a large car park near the foot of the hill that leads up to the centre.
Malinska is just 15 minutes drive from the villa and is situated on the west coast of the island. This is a small town that stretches along a stunning piece of coast with a good selection of bars, restaurants, shops and some good pebble beaches.
Krk Town, the island’s capital, Punat and the port of Valbiska (for ferries to the island of Rab to the south) are all under 30 minutes drive.
Mid June-mid Sept Wednesdays in Vrbnik is a series of musical concerts in a different venue each week. There’s huge variety, one week could be classical harp, the next a Blues singer.
Last weekend in July Days of Malinska, live music and barbeque party, usually by the waterfront.
June-Sept Fishermens Parties at various places across the island. An evening party by the waterfront with local fish snacks and live music.
Last Weekend in Aug Krk Wine Days is a celebration of Vrbnik wine with the main square given over to the famous island wine and stalls sell authentic island produce from honey, figs, lavender, herbal body oils, cheese and dried hams.
