Llerena Holidays

Llerena holidays

Llerena is a ‘White’ town just north of the Extremaduran border with Andalucia and located 2,103 ft above sea level. With a population of 6,000, it is a very good base from which to explore the cities of Zafra and Merida if one is looking for a smaller centre in which to stay and drive to nearby Zafra and Merida.. In 1966 the town declared itself a Historical Artistic Gathering. The Moors occupied the town from the 8th to the 13th centuries and then the Grand Masters of the Order of St James of The Sword established the town as their headquarters. The Zapata Palace in the Plaza of the Inquisition is an impressive building and was the seat of the Inquisition. The Plaza of Spain is particularly impressive with the church of Our Lady of Granada and the Town Hall. Overall the town is a blend of Moorish, Mudejar, Gothic and Baroque styles. There is a variety of restaurants chiefly serving traditional Extremaduran dishes.
